Nepal extends lockdown until June 2 amid growing COVID-19 cases with two deaths

KATHMANDU, May 17 | The government on Sunday decided to extend the nationwide lockdown until June 2.

A Cabinet meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Official Residence in Baluwatar took the decision to continue the lockdown. The lockdown which was first enforced in the country on March 24 was coming to an end on Monday midnight, May 18.

As of Sunday evening, the country witnessed 295 COVID-19 cases with two fatalities. Earlier this afternoon, a high-level committee for the prevention and control of COVID-19 recommended to the government to continue the lockdown at least for 15 days in view of the rising number of coronavirus cases.

A 25-year-old male from Banke, who died early morning today at a quarantine facility in Narainapur, Banke, had tested positive for COVID-19 during the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing in the afternoon.

He had been suffering from high fever and diarrhoea since Saturday night.  The young man had been kept at a quarantine facility after he came back from India on May 12.

On Saturday evening, Nepal confirmed the first coronavirus death. Swab samples of a 29-year-old female from Sindhupalchowk, who died on Thursday, tested positive on Saturday afternoon.
